Tackling a chronic skin condition when your dog keeps scratching and licking its skin and paws, causing self-induced wounds, can be frustrating. We hear you! Try these tips from our vet to manage your dog's sensitive skin and prevent flare-ups, including some shampoos and skin supplement brands that our vet loves since they are actually works for our sensitive-skin patients!

  1. Gentle Bathing Routine:

  • Dogs with sensitive skin may benefit from a regular bath using special shampoo that is gentle for sensitive skin once or twice a month, depending on their condition. If your dog has been diagnosed with atopic dermatitis, bathe them every 1 or 2 weeks, using medicated shampoos such as Sebazole, Malaseb, or Oxyfresh, known for their efficacy with sensitive skin.

  • Rinse thoroughly after each use and ensure proper drying, especially for double-coat breeds like Labrador, Golden Retriever, Corgi, Husky, etc.

  1. Dietary Considerations:

  • Ensure your dog gets a balanced and nutritionally appropriate diet. Include high-quality dog food containing essential nutrients for skin health. Your dog may also benefit from a sensitive-skin diet and hypoallergenic diet, but make sure to consult with a veterinarian first before purchasing these kinds of prescription diets to ensure they fit and will benefit your dog's skin condition.

  1. Regular Grooming:

  • Brush your dog regularly to remove loose hair and distribute natural oils, promoting a healthier coat and skin, especially if you have a long-haired dog.

  • Clean the ears once a week with ear cleaner specially designed for dogs to make sure it's safe for them.

  1. Supplement with Skin-Specific Vitamins:

  • Consider adding a skin supplement with a great mix of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, found in fish oil or specific skin health supplements. Our vets love using Megaderm Skin Supplement here since it works so well with our skin-sensitive patients!

  • Your dog may have a fungal, bacterial, or allergy condition that requires specific medicine. Nowadays, dog allergies can be managed with safe medicines that have low or even zero side effects.
